Title: Ultra-Broadband Reflectarray Antennas Based on Metasurfaces

Abstract:

Reflectarray(RA) antennas are promising candidates for long-distance wireless communication systems. However, the limited bandwidth due to the elements’ inherent bandwidth and the different spatial phase delays has been one of the critical challenges to practical RA antenna engineering applications. This talk will introduce a broadband, low-profile, and planar RA antenna based on the achromatic metasurface. The achromatic metasurface holds advantageous ultra-broadband focusing characteristics over the conventional reflectarrays. In the implementation, diverse unit cells offering versatile phase responses are employed to design the achromatic metasurface with the optimization of the convolutional algorithm. A broadband achromatic RA antenna consisting of 45×45 unit cells is simulated, fabricated, and tested. The measured 3-dB realized gain of the RA antenna reaches a fractional bandwidth of 58.2%, ranging from 8.9 GHz to 16.2 GHz. Furthermore, the RA antenna significantly enhances the feeding antenna’s gain from 7.3 GHz to 17 GHz. The reflected metasurface also has a low profile of 0.11 λL, where λL is the wavelength in the free space at 7.3 GHz. The developed RA antenna would be a good candidate in long-distance integrated communication systems, which benefit from the broadband property, high gain, low profile, and ease of fabrication.
